So offering of alcohol from a wooden jug or from a container is called offering\u00a0<em>kem<\/em>. When the\u00a0<em>kem<\/em>\u00a0is poured into a bowl or a cup, made of or plated with gold (<em>ser<\/em>), then the offering becomes\u00a0<em>serkem<\/em>. Similarly, when one makes a special offering of alcohol to an important figure or divinity, it is also called\u00a0<em>serkem<\/em>\u00a0or golden libation. It is an honorific term indicating that one is offering the best alcohol in the best container.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What should one think of while offering serkem?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When one offers\u00a0<em>serkem<\/em>, one takes the container of alcohol and blesses it by means of meditation and chanting of the mantra \u2018<em>O\u1e43 A\u1e25 Hu\u1e43<\/em>\u2019.\u00a0<em>Om<\/em>\u00a0turns everything into a great expanse of emptiness,\u00a0<em>Ah<\/em>\u00a0converts the materials, in full awareness of the state of emptiness, into fantastic offerings of nectar and\u00a0<em>Hu\u1e43<\/em>\u00a0turns the nectar into all kinds of pleasant offerings and distributes them to deserving recipients. In this way, one makes the\u00a0<em>serkem<\/em>\u00a0offering to all the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and sentient beings.<\/p>\n<p>The Bhutanese use written liturgies for offering\u00a0<em>serkem<\/em>. The two most common\u00a0<em>serkem<\/em>\u00a0in Bhutan are\u00a0<em>Degay serkem<\/em>, in which one offers\u00a0<em>serkem<\/em>\u00a0to eight classes of spirits. The world of powerful non-human spirits is classified into eight categories and\u00a0<em>serkem<\/em>\u00a0is offered to them. The most popular practice of\u00a0<em>serkem<\/em>Bhutanese do in formal occasions is\u00a0<em>marchang<\/em>. It is called\u00a0<em>marchang<\/em>\u00a0because it is an alcohol offering with butter decorations. In the most common\u00a0<em>marchang<\/em>\u00a0liturgy Bhutanese use, the offering is made to all gurus including both the immediate root guru and the gurus in the lineage, to all different divinities mentioned in tantric texts, to\u00a0<em>\u1e0d\u0101kini<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>\u1e0d\u0101ka<\/em>\u00a0spiritual beings who help Buddhist practitioners and reside in\u00a0powerful holy site, to all the dharma protector deities led by Mah\u0101k\u0101la Yeshe Gyonpo and finally to sentient beings including the spirits who reside in the house and place.<\/p>\n<p>The alcohol represents the five nectars that help develop inner spiritual experience.
